Coonskin Caps
The coonskin cap sensation came about due to Disney’s 1954 television show Davy Crockett, Indian Fighter which starred Fess Parker. In the TV show, David Crockett was portrayed as wearing a coonskin cap. This helped to start the ‘coonskin’ fad among boys young and old. However, the caps which were usually available for purchase were made of a faux fur line skull cap with a raccoon tail attached. Thousands of the sensational hats were sold throughout the decade of the 1950’s until Davy Crockett’s popularity faded out. |
