The percentage of obesity is actually really small compared to its large numbers of famine and undernourishment. Statistics have shown that some families eat up to eight pounds of food a day, while others eat less than one pound a day. This famine crisis is a country wide problem. The United Nations believe that 16 million are in risk of famine, and 800,000 are threatened daily by starvation. The United Nation World Food Program also estimates that about 8 million people are in immediate need of food aid.
One of the problems is nature. During the wet season Ethiopia would receive little to no rain. In 1984-1985, nearly 1 million peopled died because of the insufficient amount of food. It is not only the meager amounts of food that kill people, water-borne diseases, and high risk foods contribute to deaths. Some diseases are Hepatitis A, Typhoid fever, malaria and others. Malnutrition affects everyone, especially children. The future of Ethiopia is in their hands. But how can this happen if 300,000 children die every year because of starvation. Even if the children are able to fight the hunger they are more likely to be permanently affected. UNICEF has found the experience of starvation could impair immune systems, neurological damage and retard physical growth.
Ethiopia needs to take action on this problem, and slowly try to stop relying on the world’s food. They should start industrializing their country and pull themselves out of the ditch they dug themselves into. |
