Growing Discrimination Due to Obesity

As the growing percentage of obesity continues to increase, discrimination is growing right along with it. Living in a western society people are expected to be healthy, skinny, and in shape. In a survey done by European Congress for Obesity in Athens, they found that 76 percent of obese people have been verbally abused. They have also found that 52 percent have been bullied, and 51 percent feel intimidated by discriminators. Another survey, provided by The Obesity Awareness & Solutions Trust found that 93 percent of obese people believe that being obese affects their lives. It affects their social life’s, self confidence, and their self esteem.

Companies all over the world today are trying to raise awareness about obesity not only about the bullying that is occurring, but also about the diseases that can occur. In the UK they have linked 30,000 deaths due to obesity. In a study done by Dr. Kelly Brownell, she has found that discrimination is documented in education, health care, and employment. They found that 28 percent of the teachers said that obesity is the worse thing that can happen to a person. Through out the world discrimination is continuing to grow. Something needs to be done to discontinue and stop this injustice.
