Obesity in Britain

"Children are bullied in the playground over the brands of food in their lunchbox and there is over-whelming peer pressure to look good and fit in." -Helen Briggs

Kids who are obese in Britain get teased a lot. They get bullied and teased about the brand of food they eat in their lunch boxes.

In England, more than 8.5 percent of 6 year olds and 15% of 15 year olds are considered to be obese. Children who face bad eating habits are beginning to get help from specialists. The food specialist might have them complete a food diary to see which areas of food they have a weakness in. They try helping them strengthen their weak eating habits and give them advice on eating smaller portions of foods that could affect their health. The children work in an environment where they are surrounded by others just like them and it gives them potential to actually try and work hard to burn off the fat because they are competing against others just like them.

In the fitness program, the children walk a mile on the treadmill and some of them are completely exhausted after the mile. This shows just how bad a shape they are in. It is better to have the children exercise in a place that does not have winners or losers because if there are winners than they would make the losers feel bad. If there were just losers than none of them would be motivated to actually want to lose all that excess weight.

At schools, kids who are obese are scared to change their clothes in front of others in the restrooms because they are scared they might get teased. Obese kids are less likely to be chosen for activities at lunch on the playground because of their enormous stigma.

Youths who want to take action in their obese condition tend to join a club or clinic for obesity. These clubs or clinics make exercising fun and enjoyable. They motivate kids to lose weight and make them feel happy about their image. The instructors are usually people who are very positive and they focus on change through self-confident.  These places make them feel as if they were like normal people and promote an active lifestyle. After the program, some are even motivated to join team sports in their own school.

The key to tackling obesity is exercise and eating smaller portions of food. It is better to enhance the youths mind with the precaution on obesity earlier because as they get older, it is harder to teach them to change their bad habits.
