Obesity in Australia

"[Kids] can sit on their bum and just watch television and play video games and PlayStation 2, whereas coming to a park and doing some exercise is a bit of a tough option." -Dominic Hughes

In Australia, obesity is growing at very rapid rate with about one in ever four are overweight or obese. They have one of the highest rates in the world along with the US, and Britain. Australia has doubled the amount of obese people since the last survey was conducted in the 1980s. Also, over a ten year span they found that the number of obese children has nearly tripled. Statistics have shown that 80% of overweight children are likely to become overweight adults.

Researchers blame this on TV time. They have found that there has been an increase in television viewing time which also leads to lower physical activity time. A coach in Australia; who has been teaching children over 30 years has noticed a change through the decades. He states “It is getting increasingly difficult to find kids who are willing to play, they can sit on their bum and just watch television and play video games and PlayStation 2, whereas coming to a park and doing some exercise is a bit of a tough option.”

Australia epidemic has partly to do with the newer diets but also because of the laziness of the new generations with their televisions, Xboxs, PlayStations, etc. The Australian government has set up a National Obesity Taskforce to help counteract the rapid increase of obesity in Australia. But most experts say that these children are unlikely to lose the weight, and are just a “ticking time bomb” These children are just leading themselves into a lifetime of illness.
