Chinese

The Chinese made up the majority of Seattle’s population at the time. By 1876 Chinese immigrants made up 550 of the 3400 residents living in Seattle. Trying to start a new life the immigrants built houses and communities along the swampy lands of King Street. This allowed more access to white customers. Being stiff believers of the old ways, the Chinese residents built oriented ponds, put out paper lanterns, and hung dragons. When the Great Fire of Seattle devastated the whole city, it left the Chinese immigrants with nothing but to start all over.
