A More Perfect Union

On December 7, 1941 Japan positioned an attack on the United States. Japan decided to bomb the US naval base in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. This act gave the Americans the idea to retaliate and initiate World War II. They called upon all men who were eligible for military duty and who were ready for combat, except the Japanese Americans. Soon after Pearl Harbor Japanese men were known for being called “4C’ or non-draftable.

Later on the “4C’s” and their families were placed in concentration camps all over the US by the government. Nevertheless, on February 1, 1943, the United States government changed its opinion about Japanese Americans serving in the army. They announced the formation of the 442nd Infantry Regimental Combat Team.

The 442nd consisted of Japanese that were willing to volunteer from the Hawaiian Islands and the main parts of the United States. There were many reasons why the Japanese felt that had to serve for the United States; they had to show that they were loyal to their country and serving was the only way they thought they could change their future for themselves and their families at home (A More Perfect Union).
