After the attack on Pearl Harbor, all American citizens of Japanese ancestry were dismissed from the Hawaiian Territorial and National Guard. The 100th Infantry Battalion were completely Japanese-American volunteers. They were created because Japanese Americans on Hawaii felt that they deserved a chance to defend their country.

The 100th were sent to Italy and after fighting their way up the Italian peninsula, the 100th were joined by the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, a segregated Nisei regiment. The 100th and 442nd fought brilliantly in Italy, Belgium, southern France, and Germany. Following the war, 680 men were killed in battle; 67 were missing; 3,600 Purple Hearts; and 500 Oak Leaf Clusters were given for men who suffered injuries in combat.

Their motto was, "Go for Broke." (A More Perfect Union).
