LIFE STORIES Elisa Salem died on July 27 at the tender age of 26 by jumping from the house of her abusive Jordanian employer, Majoda Tawfig. According to Elisa’s unsent letters to her family, her employer began abusing her when she told Tawfig that she was not really single. Elisa did not know that her employer was interested in only having single employees. After Tawfig found that Elisa was married, she started to abuse Elisa. She made Elisa extend her contract for another year in Jordan and forced her to work 18 hours per day. Elisa was also obliged to walk around the house and serve the Tawfigs without any clothes on. Elisa’s family was not convinced that their daughter just jumped from the house and died. When her body was returned to the Philippines and her family was able to see thier daughter, they found many marks and bruises. The National Bureau of Investigation in the Philippines could not determine the cause of Elisa’s death because her dead body did not contain her vital internal organs when it was brought to the Philippines. The case has remaned unsolved and will continue to be a mystery unless there are witnesses of the crime that are willing to cooperate with the Philippine government.
