CAUSES
The Philippine Senate approved the Visiting Force Agreement (VFA) in 1999. This agreement allowed the United States military to stay in the Philippines and use its twenty-two ports to teach new combating techniques, and to show the high-technology military equipment to the Phillipine military. Many Filipinos are opposed to the agreement because of various reasons. Many women saw the visiting of the U.S Military as an opportunity to earn money the quick way. Others saw marrying a U.S. soldier as a way to go to America, giving them opportunities to help their struggling families in the Philippines. (Nivatvongs, Nitara)
