Many of the women that are trafficked into different parts of the world come from a rural area. For many families, this means that they are not very well exposed to the city life and its dangers. They live on farms, most do not attend school and are able to exist mainly on what they grow, to eat. These women are also perfect targets for the trafficking trade, because many of those women easily fall into false promises. These targeted women want to improve the financial status of their families and are willing to do anything to earn money to do so. Once they are tricked, they are sent to different parts of the Philippines, or many times, different countries, in order to “entertain” customers. "(95%) complained of being decieved about the nature of the work such as being told that they would perform as entertainers or hotel chambermaids, or work in restaurants or bars, but ended up working in the sex industry." (UNODC) "Others were decieved about their working conditions, such as having to maintain a quota of customers and drinks, long working hours, having to clean up the club after work having to pay bar fines and work when they were sick." (UNODC) They are forced to follow anything their customers tell them to do and their families have no way to help them out or know what happened to them. (Nivotvongs, Nitara) |
