Guanyin is the "oldest temple in Penang." It was uilt by the Hokkien and Cantonse communities in 1800. Currently it stands on a hilly slope. Inside of the worship hall there is a statue of Skayamuni Buddha. It represents the highest level of enlightenment and is also the main alter used for worshiping. This precious temple is named after the Goddess Guanyin. She is "associated strongly with fertility rites." Also many people pray to her for "mercy in time of distress."The Guanyn temple is mostly viited on "the 19th day of the second, sixth, and ninth mons." On these days many worshipers crowd the shrine and "offer food, flowers, and oil." They become completely devoted to her and "seek consolation for various problems."
