QUESTIONS&ANSWERS |
Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI) is a non-profit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry. HFHI seeks to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness from the world and to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action, and invites people from all walks of life to work together in partnership to help build houses with families in need.
Q: What kinds of volunteer opportunities are available at HFHI?
A: We build simple, decent homes, using volunteer labor and donated materials. We also sell those homes at no profit and no-interest. With that, we have plenty of volunteer activities for you:
+Construction Site: Portland HFHI needs construction volunteers on-site Wednesday through Saturdays, year-round. If you are interested in volunteering with the construction site, you will be required to work a full day (8:30 - 4:00). Both skilled and unskilled volunteer are welcome!
+ReStore Warehouse: Our ReStore warehouse is open from Thursday through Saturday from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. every week. Volunteer will work at the warehouse; help the warehouse customers find items to purchase, along with pricing and stocking newly donated items.
+Driving: Drive our truck to pick up donations, commit to drive the Portland Habitat for Humanity 6-speed, 30 foot diesel truck once a week to pick up in-kind donation and then unload at our warehouse on North Columbia River.
+Picking up donations: using your own vihicles, you can help us pick up donation in Portland area.
+Committees: If you are interested in joining the committees, you can sign up at the Volunteer Orientation. Note: there are different kinds of committees at HFHI, make sure you choose one before you sign up. More details.
Q: What are some of the requirements to volunteer at HFHI?
A: Interested Volunteers should attend one of our Volunteer Orientation Meetings, held on the third Tuesday of each month from 6-7 p.m. at our office at 1478 NE Killingsworth. There is no need to pre-register.
Q: How old can I be?
A: Both youth and adult groups are welcome to join us! However, due to your safety, no youth under the age of 14 is permitted on an active construction site. Youth between ages of 14 and 18 must be accompanied by a mentor over the age of 21 and must have a youth waiver form signed by their parents or guardian.
Q: Who can I contact to volunteer?
A: If you'd like to join our volunteer team, please contact our Volunteer Coordinator, Jennifer Twyman at (503)287-9529.
