Cambodia's Relationship
with the world during the Khmer Rouge...
In 1976, they came up with a plan to
attract foreign money by initiating a five year arrangement to develop
the country economically, after the Chinese cut off its aids to
Vietnam. In 1977, after months of intense border disputes between
Cambodia and Vietnam, the Khmer Rouge attacked the Vietnamese villages
bordering Cambodia. Vietnam retaliated by attacking all the Cambodian
positions bordering Vietnamese territories. In the conflict, Cambodia
was aided by China, forcing Vietnam to side with the Soviet Union
in June 29, 1978. On December 12, 1978, Vietnam started a massive
invasion over Cambodia by sending 160,000 troops into the country.
In 1979, the Khmer Rouge was forced to the western part of Cambodia,
near the Thai border. Thus the Khmer Rouge reign over Cambodia came
to end.
