The Effects of AIDS on Women

It seems like AIDS is affecting everyone in Africa. But today, women are the highest victims in getting HIV positive. They make up half of the population of people infected with AIDS in Africa. The main reason that women are most in harm is because of the society's structure about sex. Sex is not an open topic to talk about in Africa. Because of this, it raises concerns about African people learning about safe sex publicly. The president of Ghana, has set up a meeting about the concern of rapid AIDS transmission in 1995. He talked about being faithful to partners, and the important use of condoms. He also made a point that the community must start bringing the topic up or else AIDS will contine a rapid spread. Unfortunately, AIDS continues to grow today. The 1995 meeting had little effects.

In the World Health Organization, HIV infection is much higher for women compared to men in the African countries. In simple terms, some cities have a ratio of one in three women with HIV. This is not because the women aren’t monogamous, they are. But they get the disease from their husbands. The problem has easted for so long because women have less power and protection against a male dominant society. In the African society, it’s hard for them to say “No” or prefer the use of condoms.

Now that AIDS is becoming more serious everyday, women are finally making a move to stop the action. They are all gaining confidence among themselves and are ready to fight for their human rights (Bogert,v126 n13 p52).
