At every celebration, there are certain traditions that take place. There are also different things they symbolize. In the Native American culture, they celebrate health, strength, wealth, energy, and the Great Spirit. People come from all over to experience a form of worship that has been practiced for many years. Before powwows, elders, and experienced people sweat in the scared sweat lodge and pray for a good and successful celebration. “When people come onto the grounds, they can know powwow has already been prayed for.”(Arlee, pg 37) And when people are preparing the grounds for the people, much work goes into making sure that everything is set. Tipi poles are cut, stands are set up, outfits are repaired, bathrooms are set up, and venders are ready.

Changing Times

Keeping up with tradition is hard. Elders and parents have the tough job of teaching their kids to spread eagle between two different cultures. One culture that is much more modern and exclusive and one that is more traditional. They must bring them up in an environment that is supportive of tribal culture in another society that looks down upon the tribes.
It seems as though children are forced between wearing normal clothes or their outfits, or going to dances or going to powwows.
