At powwows there are certain ways to show respect, ways that are based in cultural knowledge and ways of acting. When you visit a powwow, it is not like going to a movie, play, or a show; it is a scared ceremony that is now open to people who are not Native American. A powwow is like other celebrations for Native Americans; they are praying and honoring the sick, the dead, and their loved ones who are still living. Dancing is a way to reach and send prayers to the Great Spirit. Feasting is a way to feed everybody, fill bellies, and celebrate the wealth of the hunt and Mother Earth.

Once the celebrations were outlawed because they seemed outlandish, and later they were turned into a type of show for white tourists who came and watched. This is not the case today. Visitors are honored guests who should act civilly and enjoy the celebration without being unruly or impertinent. If you disobey these simple “rules,” and are rude, you are looked down upon, and may even be asked to leave. Respect and consideration are the most important things you should remember when you attend a cultural event.

Giveaways are when a certain family chooses to giveaway prized possessions of a certain person to thank all the people around them for being in their lives. Things that are often given away include blankets, cups, silverware, towels, candles, jackets, clothing, and other small trinkets.
