Fred Hemmings

 

Fred Hemmings jr. was born in Honolulu, Oahu, on January 9th, 1946.  Along with being a great surfer, Hemmings was also an Outrigger canoe racer, marathon runner, sports entrepreneur and directed things like the Outrigger Canoe Club, United States Surfing Federation, and the Denver Broncos.
He grew up near Waikiki and learned to surf when he was very young. Through out his life, Fred competed in many surfing competitions and placed in the top 5. In 1958 (when he was 12 years old) Fred entered into the Makaha International Surfing Championships and won 3rd place in the jr. men division. And then, in both '61 and '63, he won 1st place for the same contest (the Makaha International Surfing Championships; jr. men division).    Fred continued to win 1st place in the Makaha International Surfing Championships in 1964, '65 and '66.  When Fred entered the World Surfing Championships in 1965, he came in 5th place, but when he competed in the competition in 1968, he won 1st place.
