     Marijuana is everywhere in the United States. Many people believe that it is harmless because it grows naturally. For some time, people thought that marijuana made people psychotic and dangerous. The prohibition of marijuana has been in effect for a long time. Hemp has been around for a while, even though its use for intoxication just recently grew popular. The education of marijuana has changed from what it is now because people’s perceptions are different. Marijuana use has declined over the years and it has cost much money for federal anti-marijuana campaigns.

Here are some important dates on marijuana history:

 

o      1920’s- smoking in U.S. is widespread

o      1930’s- no discussion about marijuana in schools

o      1934-1956- narcotic use is banned in movies

o      1937- Marijuana Tax Act- banned recreational and medicinal use of cannabis

o      1937- all states had passed anti-marijuana legislation

o      1961- United Nations Convention on Narcotic drugs- 54 nations take action against trafficking of cannabis

o      Federal Drug Enforcement Agency spent $1.3 billion a year against marijuana
