Effects on Children

Dangers of Tobacco:     Ingredients      Health Hazards     Secondhand Smoke     Social Issues    Effects on Children     Interactive

In 1988, students were forbidden  to use of tobacco in school and on school property. Just because children are aware of smoking doesn’t mean that they are aware of how much harm it can cause them. This plays a huge role in why kids start smoking at an earlier age every year.

 * Children are 3 times more likely to smoke if their parents smoke.

 * Children who experiment with cigarettes quickly become addicted to the nicotine in tobacco.

* Children who smoke are 2-6 times more likely to have coughs, wheezing, and shortness of breath.

* Smoking habits of friends and siblings influence most young smokers.

* Advertising creates an impression that smoking is a socially acceptable activity.

* Every year between 80,000-100,000 children become addicted to tobacco worldwide.

* Half of the 4th-6th graders have tried smoking.
