There are a great number of African Americans who smoke.  A large number of them are teenagers.  Smoking is one of the leading causes of death in the African American population.  African Americans also have a problem with quitting, although they are highly motivated to quit.

·       25% of black adults smoke

·       20% of high school students smoke

 

 

 

 

 

 

·       Smoking causes more deaths than AIDS, homicide, and accidents

o      This may be caused by:

§       High levels of nicotine dependence

§       Lack of personalization of health effects

·       Blacks statistically are less successful to quit than whites (50.5% vs. 35.4%).
