Hello and welcome to the Minority Male Health arena.  Over the years, minorities have been diagnosed with more serious health issues during their middle age than the general population.  Their life expectancy is seven years less than the average white male’s because minorities lack health insurance, disregard health care, and/or lack awareness.  The cause of this begins in the early years of a minority male’s life.

There is a consortium that focuses on minority male health.  The consortium includes Bowie State University, Morehouse College, Wilberforce University, Morgan State University, and Lincoln University.  For information about the new minority male health consortium go to www.healthy-men.org.

Mission Statement:

~    Inform and educate male students about diseases and lifestyles contributing to a high and early mortality rate among African American and Hispanic males.

~    To heighten student awareness regarding the roles diet, exercise, and hygiene play in maintaining healthy lifestyles.

~    To create and promote forums, workshops, and campaigns designed to offer students alternative methodologies to improve physical and mental health throughout their lives.

~    To collaborate with other campus organizations in reducing smoking, drug and alcohol abuse throughout the community.

~    To involve medical and public health professionals in educating students regarding the need to refrain from physical, sexual and socially risky behaviors that contribute to premature death for minorities as well as offering alternatives.

~    To encourage minority males to make better use of medical professionals as it relates to their health care.
