Minority Male Overview

Minority men have poorer health conditions and die sooner compared to the rest of the population.  A reason for this is that men go to the doctor half as much as women do.  Also, the doctor visits are usually shorter and are not likely to include advice for better health.  Here are some statistics:

·      28% of African American men and about half of all Latino men do not have health insurance.

·      Men are more likely to be in unsafe situations such as prison, drug abuse, and homelessness.

·      Men are more likely than women to drink more alcohol.

·      Minority men’s death rates are about twice as high for homicide, suicide, accidents, and liver problems

Importance of Preventing Infections

The world has had increased outbreaks of diseases in the past few decades.  These decades used to be better controlled.  The world has also had an increased amount of infectious agents that cause incurable diseases such as:

1.   HIV

2.   Hepatitis C

*    These have become significant causes of illness and death in many parts of the world.

Reasons why infections have increased:

1.   Rapid population growth

2.   Increased poverty

3.   Expansion of the population into “remote areas"

4.   Environmental degradation

5.   Improved transportation, leading to easier spread of disease

6.   Inadequate or deteriorating public health infrastructure

7.   Poor disease control and disease prevention
