Holocaust Remembrance Day

One day each year is set aside as the day to remember the holocaust and the people it claimed. This day is Yom HaShoa, or in English, Holocaust Remembrance Day. Generally Yom HaShoa takes place during the spring, but because it is set according to the Jewish calendar the actual date varies from year to year. On the Hebrew calendar this day is marked on Nisan 27th. It is a day filled with solemnity, sincerity, and education. As the world remembers past undesirable occurrences, it prevents them from reoccurring. As the world remembers the holocaust, it makes sure such an event remains in the past and does not slip into the future.

On this day members of synagogues gather to read aloud the names of individuals who died during the holocaust. The Kaddish, a Jewish prayer for the deceased, is spoken. The children are read books, told stories, and educated about the great tragedy. Memorial services are held to honor and remember the people who died in the grasp of the holocaust; these services are especially common in Israel. On this day each year, the Jewish nation does its best to make the world remember.
