Why did the Freedom Movement
focus on Mississippi? For one, the condition that Mississippi was
in was devastating in 1964. The percentage of African Americans that
were registered to vote was only 6.7%. Lynching was a community event
where everyone came to watch. Racism was so bad that no Black man
or women could leave their home without getting things thrown at them
or racist comments shouted at them. This page outlines the main aspects
of "why Mississippi."
