HBCU's

History of Historically Black

Colleges

And

Universities

Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU's) are higher institutions of learning, which were founded in the later 1800's. These schools were established to educate African Americans to get ready for the world upon the end of slavery. African Americans at this time were slaves. They had been denied the privilege of access to every level of educational learning. HBCU's were established before the time of the civil war as racism raised to the core of the nations consciousness. Before the HBCU's were established, the opportunity for African Americans to receive higher levels of education did not exist. This is mainly because most whites felt that blacks were either subhuman or inferior in the areas of intellect and moral traits. Very few African Americans were given the opportunity to receive a college education in the liberal north and it was practically impossible in the non-peaceful south. All of these actions came to an end after the civil war. Today in the United States of America there are approximately 115 HBCU's that have been established. It is good to encourage many African Americans to attend an HBCU because there is no education like a black education.
