Miscellaneous - Nanoguitar

Who designed it: Dustin W. Carr a 1994 graduate from OSU. With the help of Harold G. Craighead, a professor of engineering and physics at Cornell University.

Where : At Cornell University
When : April 1997
Definition : A nano guitar

Size : The size of a blood cell, it has six strings them being about 50 nanometers or 100 atoms wide.

Comparison :
1 nanometer = 1 billionth of a meter
Human hair = 200,000 nanometers wide
Strings of the guitar = about 50 nanometers wide

What plucks the strings: An atomic force microscope that releases a beam of electrons

Applications : Can have a huge impact in telecommunications even biological research

In what way will it contribute to biological research?
"If people can measure the force that drives individual cells, that gives them information about how they work…'' Craighead

If scientists are able to move cells this will then give them the idea of how they operate which will have a huge impact in medical research.
