Michael Merzenich
hypothesized that " in adults there is a basic problem in signal
reception, as complex sound information streams into the cerebral cortical
system underlying aural speech representation." This means that the
brain that interprets the sound is not functioning, as it should be therefore
causing the dyslexic to not read as quickly or as rapidly as they should. Several tests
were performed on the adults. One method was to play two different sounds
for the adults about a fraction of a second apart. Then they were asked
to "identify the sounds and replay the sounds in the order that the
sounds were played to them." (ibid.) During the test, the brain activity
of those that were being tested were recorded. The researchers
found out that people with dyslexia noticed that there were two different
sounds, but they couldn't identify them and they could not put them back
in order. Through these tests the researchers were trying to find "remedial
therapies" (ibid.) for those with dyslexia and/or any individual
that has trouble processing sounds. |
