Dyslexia was not made known to the world until 1876. History already tells us that dyslexia is not caused by vision problems.
About 1860, several patients had certain brain injuries known as aphasia (word-blindness) and alexia (the ability to read is caused by their ability for see or speak). People with these types have abnormalities in their brains due to injury or disease.

One patient was in an accident and had the types described above as well as several others. Years later, the patient was able to read and speak again, but was still not able to write and comprehend very well. This showed doctors that dyslexia "resulted from abnormal brain development." How doctors specifically narrowed down certain abnormal brain development to dyslexia is unknown, but studies in brain development contributed to how dyslexia was discovered.

After recognizing why people behave the way they do, doctors, scienctists and psychiatrists can help people with dyslexia to adapt. Though there is no cure, these people may learn more effectively, helping them to become successful in life. Some dyslexics have even overcome their condition to become famous.
