Laws/Acts
As a result of the
massive immigration during the California Gold Rush, the government
felt they had to control the population outburst. Below is a chronological
timeline of acts or laws that the U.S. we created because of this influx
of immigration. Not only did the government speak out against the Chinese,
but also the citizens of America who has treated the immigrants with
hostility. The United States government believed putting these laws
and acts into effect helped put order back into society.
1870 The
state California passed a law putting a stop to the importation of Asian
females for the use of prostitution. Some were sent as mail order brides
and used as slaves, where they had no hope of freedom. Though some were
lucky to have a nice "master", not all were that lucky. During
these times, the act of slavery lives again. More
1880 America and China signed a treaty stating that America had
the right to limit Chinese immigration. China's government was much
weaker at this moment with their own country's problems and did not
see this as unjust at the time. The mixing of races was no longer allowed
in California.
1882 Chinese Exclusion Act banned all Chinese laborers coming
into the U.S. for the next ten years. This was put into affect when
anti-Chinese attitude gained popularity in the U.S. More
1902 Chinese exclusion act extended for another decade. Many
Chinese were still trying to enter the US despite the hostile treatment,
but found to be rejected because of the act.
1943 Chinese Exclusion Act removed. This was removed after the
Angel Island immigration detention center closed down in 1940. By this
time the Chinese government had soared and their demand for the cooperation
of the American government was more effective. More
