During
the California Gold Rush or "Gam Sann" as the Chinese called
it, a large number of people immigrated to the West Coast of the United
States. The hardship of farming and the economical issues within their
homeland was one main reason for journeying to the US. The majority
traveled by ship along with other fellow immigrants seeking riches.
They would usually use whatever money they saved up for the trip hoping
for a bigger return once they reached America. With their dreams crushed
as they were detained and denied entry for up to two years, they were
ashamed of putting their family back home in poverty. Promising their
family money and food in their belly and letting them down left some
heavy weight on the detainees.
