"The gold and silver of America is very appealing. Jabbing an awl into the thigh in search of glory, I embarked on the journey. Not only are my one-thousand pieces of gold already depleted, but my countenance is blackened. It is surely for the sake of the family."

Boat on Dock
From 1910-1940, Angel Island served as a point of entry for a majority of Chinese immigrants coming from the East to the West. People coming to America saw it as the gateway to success and riches, but no sooner had they set foot onto the land, reality shattered these hopes and dreams. Denied their entry, the Chinese were detained on this island for as long as two years, frozen between their two worlds. The barracks reflected the pain and sadness endured by the people as thirty years of depression passed. The injustice cannot be compensated, but by unveiling the history of the Chinese immigrants, it will help others understand the struggle they had to deal with in order to find a stand in America, where everyone is supposedly "welcomed with open arms".
