Because there was
a great deal of tension between new Chinese immigrants and the Americans,
it gave rise to a various amount of desputes that were taken to court.
Below are a few examples:
1854 People
v. Hall. This act stated that Chinese could not give testimony in court.
A Chinese male witnessed a murder, but they were not allowed to give
testimony as a witness in court. More
1886 Yick
Wo v. Hopkins. This case was about how people were accusing the Chinese
for not having a permit for doing laundry in the building causing harm
to others. However, it was proven that their applications for a permit
were in process and approved. More
1898 United
States v. Wong Kim Ark. As a Chinese born in America Wong Kim went back
to China for a visit and then when he came back to re-enter the US,
they would not allow him re-entry. They said that he was not an American
citizen and he said that they were violating his fourteenth amendment
