The poor quality of the food caused a lot of uproar. It was reported that stale bread and hard rice was served until a riot broke out. Later on, Washington DC agreed to serve better food.

Chinese kitchen helpers

Death was everywhere. Some committed suicide when forced to return to China and some could not bear it any longer and hung themselves in the barracks. Other angry and upset detainees carved Chinese poems onto the walls suppressing their seething emotions.
