Gangs have become a growing problem in public schools, which had been considered a "neutral turf."

What is a gang member?
According to Penal Code Section 186.22(a), a gang member is the following:

Any person who actively participates in any criminal street gang with knowledge that its members engage in or have engaged in a pattern of criminal gang activity, and who willfully promotes, furthers, or assists in any felonious criminal conduct by members of that gang. . .
Is there a gang in your town?
There could be many types of gangs in your town and you might not even know about it. Their numbers could range 3-100, and their ages could be 8-80. You may not know if there is an active small gang in your town.

Gang activity is very common in almost all cities and towns. The following are some gang situations that you might see:

Power Struggles
Territorial Battles
Initiation and Detachment Rituals
Attaining High Status Rituals
Material Gain
Expression of Grievances
Retribution
Self Defense
Boxing (games) Matches

Some theories of why young adults choose to join gangs follow:

Excitement of Gang Activity
Peer Pressure
Physical Protection
Attention
Financial Gain
Sense of Belonging
Family Tradition

Gangs are common types of violence in your area because they are a frequent interaction among individuals. They are commonly present and they have an ordinary social status in the social class.

Gangs normally start in areas in which one type of class, race, or age group live in. If that sounds like your town you may want to watch out for gang activity.

Help stop gangs!
Gangs will not usually dissapear easily. The family and community need to work together to overcome this. Both of these factors are important in a young adult's social, emotional, and physical needs. They need to be able to fulfill the needs of the persons. Sometimes something as simple as graffiti removal will reduce violence.
