  The history of cells began about   four hundred years ago.  Today there are still many advancements being made in Cell Biology.  Below you will find a timeline of milestones in Cell Biology.

 

Timeline

1626- F. Redi postulated that all living things do not arise from spontaneous generation.
1655- Robert Hooke described the first cells.

1674- Lewhoek discovered the first protozoa.  He saw bacteria nine years later.

1833- Brown discovered the cell nucleus inside of an orchid.

1838- Schleidan and Schwann proposed the cell theory.

1879- Alexander Flemming described chromosome behavior during mitosis.

1939- Siemens produced the first commercial transmission electron microscope.

1941-Coons used florescent labeled antibodies to detect cell antigens

1957- Nucleic acids were separated.

1981- Transgenic mice and fruit flies were produced

1996-The first sheep were cloned.
