In this tutorial you will learn how to make patterns in Photoshop. In the examples section at the bottom of the tutorial the image on the left is a pattern and the image on the right is a graphic with pattern applied.

We will start with a square grid 10 pixels high. Create new picture file of size 10 X 10. Check Transparent in the contents section.

Select Pencil Tool() 1 pixel thick and draw lines as shown on the left. Caution: The image on the left is 1600% zoom in.
Press Ctrl+A to select the whole canvas; then go to Edit -> Define Pattern.

Open any picture you would like to draw a grid on. I used the picture of a flower. After opening create a new layer by pressing Ctrl+Shift+N. Then go to Edit -> Fill. A small window will appear. Choose Fill with Pattern and press OK.

An image will have a grid similar to the on the left. Try to change Opacity and Blending Modes to get different effects of the grid.
