Lesson 1: Regular Verbs

One of the fundamentals of a sentence is the use of personal pronouns.  Not only do they serve as objects of a sentence, but also as aids for the conjugation of verbs.  Personal pronouns, unless at the beginning of the sentence, are not capitalized.  The only personal pronoun capitalized in the nominative case is Sie (formal ‘you’).  The following is a table of personal pronouns in the nominative case.

  Singular Plural
First Person ich (I)

wir (we)

Second Person

du (you)

ihr (you all)

Sie (formal ‘you’)* Sie (formal)
Third Person

er (he)

sie (she)

es (it)

sie (they)

*Note: Germans use Sie when referring to a stranger or someone outside of family.  It is also used for such people who are about the same age as the speaker or older, or in formal references in text.
