Koala Characteristics/Facts

Their Latin Name is: Phascolartcos cinereus

*Koalas are marsupials.

*Size is larger in southern regions. Head and body is average size 30.7 inches.

*Weight is about 26 lbs./11.8 kg.

*Fur is thick and furry, longer on back side than on belly on the southern koalas. Northern koalas fur is short which gives them a naked appearance. Both northern and southern koalas have fluffy ears with longer white hairs.

*Their gestation period is 34-36 days (gestation means carrying the young in the uterus. (PREGNANCY)

*Koalas aren't really nice animals.

*Koalas bite and scratch.

* Koalas are not bears.

*The natives used to eat koala flesh.

* Now koalas are protected by the law.

(The koalas have a nickname which is the Teddy Bear.)
