Neptune was discovered by astronomers in 1846. Neptune's atmosphere is almost the same as Uranus's atmosphere. Neptune's atmosphere has belts of clouds that are very visible. When the Voyager 2 visited Neptune, it had a dark spot, similar to the Red Spot on Jupiter. Neptune's atmosphere releases energy to its outer layers. This helps the warm gases rise and the cool gases sink, setting up the wind patterns in the atmosphere creating belts of clouds. Neptune's atmosphere is made up of mostly nitrogen gas. The Voyager 2 also revealed that Neptune has a set of narrow rings!
Neptune is 4.2 light- hours away from the sun. It takes it sixteen hours and seven minutes to complete a rotation. Period of revolution is 163 years and 265 days. Its diameter is 49, 528 km. Density of Neptune is 1.64 g/ cm cubed. Its temperature is -225 degrees Celsius. Gravity on Neptune is 112 percent of Earth's. Neptune has eight moons, only one which is large. The largest moon is Triton, which revolves around the planet in a backwards orbit.
