The Story

By: Nick

Crop circles are designs found in fields of corn, wheat, barley, oats, canola, grass, trees, and even snow. They have been reported in almost all countries except China and South Africa. These designs are supposedly done in one night. The plants are found flat against the ground unbroken all laying in the same direction creating various patterns.

The earliest report of a design was in 1647 in England, which is where many are found today. During the 1970’s the number of reportings increased and the designs changed. Then more complex designs appeared in 1990.

There are many theories to explain how crop circles are formed. These range from hoaxes to aliens. Some have been revealed as hoaxes, but others have not been explained.

Evidence For

Crop circles have been investigated by the military, Hollywood, governments, and different Para natural groups. Farmers have watched their fields, equipment has been set up to watch the field, and yet designs have appeared. A pilot in 1996 was flying over Stonehenge and saw nothing, 15 minutes later when he flew back a design had appeared. The military have endangered life and safety to investigate and monitor crop formations, yet deny any involvement.

Evidence Against

Some crop circles have been found to be hoaxes. People trying to deceive the public or gain attention created these. Many opinions are that they are all man-made because designs they’ve seen could be made with a simple tool.

One theory of how they are made is the plants are heated about an inch from the ground, which would weaken them allowing them to bend over. Another theory is that a post is driven into the center with a string attached making the radius of the circle. Then a board is used to flatten the plants.

“ I have been present when some amazing ones were constructed. (You’ll have to take my word for it, because I’m sworn to secrecy as to which ones.) I have never seen a design that couldn’t be constructed with simple tools -- although sometimes it takes me weeks to figure out the tricks these geniuses use!” Peter Sørensen June 1, 2001
