The Story

By: Alex

The Fouke monster is a legendary Bigfoot look-alike. It is believed that he stalks the residents of Miller County. "There were 40-some sightings last year," said Rickie Roberts, Fouke's unofficial monster spokesman. "There were 22 sightings in one day. ... There's even one guy who swears there's a family of monsters who live behind his house."

Evidence For

This is one of the reported sightings: “I observed a hairy manlike creature approximately 8 foot tall walking away from me. It had sticks and leaves matted in its thick reddish brown hair. The wind was blowing my way and I smelt a very distinct musky smell. I was very frightened when it stopped and looked in my direction. I had a gun but would never shoot anything unless it is game. I now carry a video camera but have not had an opportunity to observe it again. I observed the creature one other time in 1985 and it is still hard for me to believe what I saw.” A footprint of a plaster cast was found for a while but was later destroyed in the 70’s.

Evidence Against

“Residents would have proof by now if the creature existed”, Schamback said. "There are people down there with dogs who would have run it down in two days" if it existed, he said. Toby Giles, Miller Counties chief sheriff's deputy, said there haven't been any reported sightings in the past few years, but "we do have one every once in a while." The sheriff's office used to receive a few reported sightings when he joined the department about 14 years ago, but nothing was ever confirmed," Giles said. "It's still a well-talked-about subject." The town has a local Monster Mart where you can buy souvenirs or get your picture taken as the monster himself.
