Main Theory:
While the STS-107 was re-entering earth, a tragic explosion took the lives of seven innocent and hard-working astronauts. The cause for the explosion is explained through many theories, however, they have been proven wrong. The most widely believed theory is that a tile from the shuttle itself has fallen and caused the shuttle to explode.

Other Theories:
  • Three cracks were found in July in the shuttle's stainless steel liners that were used to direct the flow of super-cold hydrogen fuel to the main engines, which might have been thought to be the reason for the February crash. The age of the cracks weren't considered because similar cracks had been found in old and new shuttles as well.

  •  Some believe that the heat tiles which were supposed to protect the shuttle were damaged by insulation foam that peeled off and hit the wind during the launch.

  •   Others also think that Columbia may have been hit by space debris while it was still in orbit.
