Peace was mentioned in Alfred Nobel’s will as one of the five prize areas to be awarded. In his will, Alfred said that this prize should be awarded to the person who in the following year has done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses. In his will he also stated that the champions of peace will be awarded by a committee of five persons to be elected by the Norwegian Storting.
