Physiology or Medicine was mentioned in Alfred Nobel’s will as one of the five prize areas to be awarded. In his will, Alfred said that this prize should be awarded to the person who in the following year has made the most important discovery within the domain of physiology or medicine. In his will he also stated that this prize shall be awarded by the Caroline Institute in Stockholm.
