In 1297, Wallace led an uprising against the English because the English killed a loved one of his. We do not know who they killed, but most people believe that it was Wallace's father. The uprising spread throughout south and central Scotland. Wallace teamed up with Sir Andrew de Moray and his men. The English army that was defeated at the battle of Stirling Bridge was led by the Earl of Surrey and Hugh Cressingham. Legend has it that Cressingham was one of the first to be killed at Stirling Bridge and that Wallace later made a belt out of his skin.
