Air Force History

 

      The 1st Air Force, which was one of the original air forces, it began on December 18, 1940 in Mitchel Field, Long Island, New York.  It was renamed as First Air Force on April 9, 1941. In the first couple of months of World War II First Air Force protected the whole eastern coast of the U.S. The division also supplied anti-submarine missions. After the war First Air Force trained many air force pilots until its inactivation on June 1958.  In July 1968 First Air Force regained the operation of protecting the eastern coast. In the 1970s and 1980s, the job of the Air National Guard had increased in North America. By the 1990s, 90 percent of air defense was done by the Air National Guard.
