Dog sleds not only have to last through rough terrain but also subzero weather! Most are built of ash wood and then soaked in water. This is so the maker can bend the brush bow handle into its traditional shape. All of the runners and handles are laminated for extra strength and smoother gliding.
Simple wooden slats hold the sled bag, which can be very heavy depending on the cargo. The sled size is about 7 feet 6 inches long and 18 inches wide when it is loaded with 30 pounds. The runners on the sled have 1/4" Teflon grips for boots in order for the musher to place their feet to ride and the handle bar is softly padded with tape and rubber.
