Tasmanian Tiger-Wolves By Brady Most Scientists believe
that Tasmanian tiger-wolves are extinct. But, some do not. If
the Tasmanian tiger-wolf is extinct, it was said to become extinct
in 1936. Another thing people couldn't understand was whether or
not this creature was a tiger or a wolf. It had stripes on its
back and a long tail, but its face made it look like a wolf.
The truth is, it was neither! It was actually more like a
kangaroo. It had a pouch for its babies to climb in. So, the
Tasmanian tiger-wolf was actually a marsupial, believe it or not. Tasmanian tiger-wolves lived in Australia and Tasmania. They
became extinct in Australia, because the Tasmanian tiger-wolves were in
a “contest” with dingoes for food.
Dingoes are wild dogs in Australia that are commonly known for
hunting and fighting with kangaroos.
Tasmanian tiger-wolves
also had to compete with Tasmanian devils
for food. Scientists say
that there are now more Tasmanian devils living than back during the
English settlement. This is
because of the Tasmanian tiger-wolves’ extinction. Tasmanian tiger-wolves primarily ate small birds, wallabies, kangaroos, and small mammals. Obviously, not much was known of the Tasmanian tiger-wolves’ diet.
