Steller's Sea Cow
By: Alex

This sea cow, living in Alaska and somewhat looking like a giant manatee was 25-30 feet long and weighed 4 tons! Steller's sea alaska cow was discovered by a man named... Stellar! What a surprise! Steller found this beast and many other animals like the Steller's jay, Steller's eider, Steller's sea eagle, Steller's sea lion, and of course Steller's sea cow.

He (Steller) was on a ship that got shipwrecked and the men were starving so they ate whatever was around, in this case it was the sea cow.  It was easy to catch because this sea cow had no fear of humans, so they did not run away.  Inch-thick skin (I'm not kidding) or not, the men ate them, and they used the skin for shoes.  Boy, they must have had a feast! You're wondering why? Well it's because the sea cow did not have any method of defense (you know like the octopus shoots ink out to scare its enemies), as most animals do.  It had no teeth!  Well it didn't need to have teeth because they ate marine algae. The men thought the species would "never end" and it would never die out!  Boy, were they wrong! In about 25 years the Steller's sea cow was gone... forever.
